An awesome opportunity of a shot for wildlife photographer Robert Haas…

Who knew flamingos were artistic??

Having got rather excited by this photo on a Friday afternoon, we googled a few other flamingo fun facts for your edification… Did you know?

– Their pink colour comes from the beta-carotene in their diets (found in shrimp and algae), and allegedly some zoos put specific dyes in their food to make them a prettier pink – no, I’m not kidding.

– Flamingos live an average of 20 to 30 years.

– The “knee” of the flamingo is actually an ankle joint and the lower leg bends forward.

– Males and females look alike.

…and that’s enough flaming o’s for now… check out the Andean Expedition, where on the Bolivian salt flats you can see the four different types of Andean flamingo – cool, eh?
