A pink elephant calf has been caught on camera in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. They are extremely rare in the African elephant population and this one was spotted by eagle eye wildlife photographer Mike Holding.
The pink colouration is caused by the elephant missing a gene making it albino. Unfortunately this means it is more likely to suffer from the strong African sun without the normal protection provided by the skin pigment that it is missing. The hope is that the young elephant will learn to seek shade and make the most of using natures natural mud pack sun tan lotion!
